Just Another Heartwarming Story

There's a guy in my office. Late 50's. Catholic. Conservative, but not on a mission or a soapbox. Will tell you if you ask him. Well-liked. Sad story. He and his wife had three kids. One was killed in a car accident at 18 years-old. Another died an infant from SIDS. Tragic.

When the baby died, they went to see the priest. They were searching for some comfort and insight, and were advised to seek those things at their church.

They followed that advice.

The priest told them that the death of their child was God's punishment for them missing mass on Sundays and generally not being good Catholics.

My former mother in law had complications during the cesarian section for the birth of her fourth child. She was told by the doctors that she should not have any more children or she could die in childbirth. They asked on the operating table if she wanted them to tie her tubes while they had her open and she said yes.

The Catholic church they belonged to got wind of it and formally excommunicated her from the Catholic church with an official public edict. To us that may sound like they were being done a favor, but for them, it was like being ostracized from the entire community.

Of course, they would have done the same thing if she had gotten pregant again and elected to abort the pregnancy to save her own life.

But who is surprised by this kind of crap? The Catholic church is bloated, festering boil of an organization with an archaic, corrupt, counter-productive, rotting from the inside-out, moving-backwards-in- time-ideology. What is surprising is that people of our generation still participate. One of our mutual friends, Viscount, is sending his son to a prominent Catholic High School - his alma mater. And he's no conservative. My folks opted out 40 years ago - kudos to them.

In the end, I'm sad for people like your co-worker who can't recognize a snake BEFORE it bites them.

I hear stuff like this and, fallen Catholic that I am (I mean fallen like Wile E. Coyote off a cliff), I admit to not having seen any such behavior with "my" church. But the Northeast where I grew up wasn't as conservative as elsewhere and my time in Catholicism was spent in the liberal post-Vatican II era.

Still, I believe stories like this when I hear them. Even moreso these days - one of the reasons (in addition to a growing agnosticism) that I could never stay with the Catholic Church. Too many of these utterly stupid rules.

If there is a god, God help those who believe in this shite.

There are idiots in every profession. This priest was telling this couple something that should have gotten him in trouble with his bishop. Catholics don't believe God plays games like this. Some friends of ours lost their baby recently and they say that their parish priest has been their greatest source of comfort and aid.
