If I Had a Boat

This is a rare live version from some radio station in Austin Texas. I’ve always loved this tune. My kids don’t get it. They think it is a stupid song.

“Kiss my ass, I bought a boat, I’m going out to sea.”

“If I Had a Boat” [click here to listen.]
By Lyle Lovett
From the album “Pontiac.”

If I had a boat
I'd go out on the ocean
And if I had a pony
I'd ride him on my boat
And we could all together
Go out on the ocean
Me upon my pony on my boat

If I were Roy Rogers
I'd sure enough be single
I couldn't bring myself to marrying old Dale
It'd just be me and trigger
We'd go riding through them movies
Then we'd buy a boat and on the sea we'd sail

And if I had a boat
I'd go out on the ocean
And if I had a pony
I'd ride him on my boat
And we could all together
Go out on the ocean
Me upon my pony on my boat

The mystery masked man was smart
He got himself a Tonto
'Cause Tonto did the dirty work for free
But Tonto he was smarter
And one day said kemo sabe
Kiss my ass I bought a boat
I'm going out to sea

And if I had a boat
I'd go out on the ocean
And if I had a pony
I'd ride him on my boat
And we could all together
Go out on the ocean
Me upon my pony on my boat

And if I were like lightning
I wouldn't need no sneakers
I'd come and go wherever I would please
And I'd scare 'em by the shade tree
And I'd scare 'em by the light pole
But I would not scare my pony on my boat out on the sea

And if I had a boat
I'd go out on the ocean
And if I had a pony
I'd ride him on my boat
And we could all together
Go out on the ocean
Me upon my pony on my boat

Everything on Joshua Judges Ruth to me is gold...

"The Sun comes up
in a coffee cup"

"Sherry she had big ones
Sally had some too
But Allison had little ones
What hate to go to school"

Well gosh, dad! You don't ride a pony on a boat! That is so stupid! So put the boat ON the pony and you sit in the boat!

I've always loved that tune too. Do you listen to the KUT podcast of live music? Some good stuff there sometimes?

No pod, or no desire?

Both.

Sound:

That is now the official launching song for Day Tripper this summer.

Man, I wish I could be there for that.

Viscount, re this being a "rare live version" I believe it's from Live in Texas. If you have not heard that CD, I highly recommend it. If you heard nothing on it but "Church" it would be well worth the price.

re this being a "rare live version" I believe it's from Live in Texas.

It may be on that record, but according to the liner notes of "107.1 KGSR broadcasts vol.7," which is where I got it from, it says "Recorded December 4th, 1998 at Austin City Limits Studios at KGSRs 8th Anniversary Party," and "All songs performed live and broadcast exclusively on 107.1 KGSR," which is why I thought to use the term "rare."

I checked All Music Guide's entry on the live record you referenced, and it says that those tracks were recorded "Jun 29th 1995 - Sep 1st. 1995."

In any event, I appreciate the heads-up, and will keep an eye out for the "Live in Texas" CD.
