1982. Music had changed. Not that he'd ever been part of any of that. You either got him, or you didn't. Usually I have no use for the video. I like this one, directed by the artist.

BTW, my wife, who is very open-minded when it comes to music can't deal with The Captain.
Daniel Pearl was the name of the Wall Street Journal reporter beheaded by Islamist fanatics in Pakistan. Angelina Jolie played his wife Mariane in A Mighty Heart. Not that I suspect any real connection, only a coincidence with the names.
My wife can't stand Capt. Beefheart either. Go figure. I don't always like all his music either, but I find him never less than... interesting-- and I apologize for the faint praise.

Oh no - I'm exactly with you on this. I find a lot of his stuff unlistenable, but he does have his charm.
